Al-Shabaab militants launched a complex attack involving suicide car bombs targeting Somali national and local forces near Gumare and Moqokori in the Hiran region. The assault resulted in casualties on both sides and intense fighting. Following the attack, Al-Shabaab claimed to have recaptured Moqokori, a town they had lost in September 2022 after a local uprising led by Ma’awisley fighters. Somali government forces and allied local militias reportedly lost control of the town amid the heavy assault. Although the Somali Army was reported to have repelled some attacks and killed several militants, clashes were ongoing as of the latest reports. The situation remains fluid with fighting continuing between Somali forces and Al-Shabaab in the central region.
