On July 9, 2025, a suicide bombing attack occurred at the Jaalle Siyaad Military Academy in Mogadishu, Somalia. The attack was carried out by a suicide bomber affiliated with the al-Qaeda-linked militant group al-Shabaab, targeting soldiers at the main entrance of one of Somalia's key army training schools during peak hours. The Somali Ministry of Defence confirmed the incident and stated that at least four Somali soldiers were killed, including junior military officers from the 14th October battalion, with several others injured. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack. Separately, on July 15, 2025, three Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers were killed and seven others injured after their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device (IED) on the Kiunga-Sankuri road in Lamu County, Kenya. This attack is suspected to be linked to al-Shabaab activities. Additionally, the militant group al-Shabaab captured the town of Tardo in Somalia’s central Hiiraan region, displacing over 12,500 families after dislodging government-allied Macwiisleey clan fighters. Furthermore, a separate suicide car bombing near Afgoye, Somalia, reportedly killed 20 Ugandan and nine Somali soldiers, indicating ongoing militant activity in the region.
