The Gauteng provincial government has continued its efforts to address the e-toll debt, making a payment of approximately R5.4 billion towards the outstanding balance. This installment, scheduled for June 30, 2025, includes over R2 billion allocated for road maintenance under the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project and around R3.4 billion directed at reducing the actual e-toll debt. This follows a previous payment of R3.8 billion made last year. The total e-toll debt stands at about R20 billion, with the Gauteng government having paid off nearly half of this amount to the National Treasury. The National Treasury had committed to covering 70% of the total debt after the termination of the e-toll system, leaving Gauteng responsible for the remaining 30%. Finance MEC Lebogang Maile has emphasized the province's commitment to settling the debt and supporting freeway upgrades despite budget constraints.
