Boric Calls July 21 ‘Democracia Siempre’ Summit in Santiago to Bolster Democracy

Chilean President Gabriel Boric has convened a high-level summit titled “Democracia Siempre” for 21 July at the Palacio de La Moneda in Santiago. The meeting will bring together Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Colombian President Gustavo Petro and Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi. According to the Chilean presidency, the leaders will seek a joint stance in favor of multilateralism, democratic governance and global cooperation rooted in social justice. Discussions are expected to focus on strengthening democratic institutions, narrowing inequality, countering disinformation and setting basic principles for regulating emerging technologies. Proposals drafted in Santiago will be refined and formally presented during a follow-up gathering on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this September.
