Astronomers are tracking an interstellar object designated 3I/ATLAS that was first detected on 1 July 2025 by the ATLAS telescope network in Chile. The body, roughly 20 kilometres across and travelling at about 210,000 kilometres per hour, is on a retrograde path through the Solar System and is expected to pass near Mars’s orbit in late October 2025. Most researchers, including teams at NASA, describe 3I/ATLAS as an unusually old comet that shows no visible outgassing. Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb contends the object’s atypical trajectory—bringing it in relatively close succession to Venus, Mars and Jupiter—could be the result of deliberate navigation, raising the possibility that it is an extraterrestrial reconnaissance probe. Loeb’s hypothesis has drawn sharp criticism from peers such as Oxford astronomer Chris Lintott and University of Hawaiʻi planetary scientist Karen Meech, who say the observations can be explained by natural processes. Observatories worldwide are continuing to collect data in order to refine the object’s orbit and composition ahead of its 2025 fly-by.
