Spanish daily ABC reported over the weekend that writer and historian Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller, wife of former Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, had established residence in La Moraleja, an exclusive suburb north of Madrid. The article said she would move with her 18-year-old son, Jesús Ernesto, who plans to study law at the Universidad Complutense, and noted that the author allegedly sought Spanish nationality earlier this year. The story was widely echoed by Mexican media outlets and drew political comment. Morena party president Luisa Alcalde said Gutiérrez Müller was “free to do what she wants,” while opinion writers questioned the cost of a move that appeared to contradict the former president’s austere discourse. On Monday Gutiérrez Müller issued a written statement rejecting the claim outright. “I have dedicated decades to teaching and research at a public university in my country, where I continue working, and of course I have not gone to live there or anywhere else,” she wrote, adding that her son also remains in Mexico. She accused ABC of publishing “calumnies” and said she remains independent from politics. Neither ABC nor Gutiérrez Müller provided documentation to substantiate their positions, leaving the status of any residency or nationality application unconfirmed.
