Joby Aviation to Acquire Blade Air Mobility’s Passenger Business for $125 Million Including Key Terminals, Medical Unit Rebrands, Shares Surge
Joby Aviation, an electric air taxi company led by CEO JoeBen Bevirt, announced the acquisition of Blade Air Mobility's passenger ride-share business for up to $125 million. The deal includes Blade's urban air mobility operations across the U.S. and Europe, encompassing key terminals and lounges in major markets such as New York City, including JFK, Newark, and Manhattan. Blade Air Mobility transported over 50,000 passengers last year through these facilities. The acquisition is expected to accelerate Joby's commercialization and deployment of electric air taxis by providing immediate market access, infrastructure, and an established customer base. Blade's medical transport division, which accounts for approximately 60% of its revenue, will remain independent and rebrand as Strata Critical Medical, focusing on medical logistics and services. The transaction is anticipated to close soon, and both companies' shares have risen significantly following the announcement, with Joby’s stock increasing by up to 22% and Blade’s by nearly 29%. The deal also includes a partnership with defense contractor L3Harris Technologies. Joby plans to expand helicopter operations from Blade after closing the acquisition, continuing operations from Joby's headquarters.
