The United States has imposed a new round of import tariffs on seven trading partners, adding duties of between 19% and 39% on goods from Taiwan, Switzerland, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. According to notices issued on 31 July, the steepest levy is a 39% duty on Swiss products, while shipments from Taiwan and Vietnam will face 20% tariffs. Imports from Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia are each subject to a 19% charge. The action comes on the eve of an 1 August deadline in ongoing trade talks, signalling Washington’s intent to harden its negotiating stance across multiple fronts.
