President Donald Trump on Wednesday released another batch of tariff notification letters, telling leaders of the Philippines, Brunei, Moldova, Algeria, Iraq and Libya that U.S. customs duties on their exports will rise to between 20% and 30% on 1 August 2025. Minutes later he posted a similar letter to Sri Lanka, expanding the day’s tally to seven economies. Copies of the letters posted on Trump’s Truth Social account and confirmed by Reuters and other news agencies set the new rates at 20% for the Philippines, 25% for Brunei and Moldova, and 30% for Algeria, Iraq, Libya and Sri Lanka. The letters warn that any retaliatory measures could trigger even higher tariffs, but also leave open the possibility of future adjustments if “relations improve.” The move forms part of the president’s broader “reciprocal tariff” campaign. Since 7 July the White House has dispatched similar notices to more than 20 countries after delaying earlier plans and extending the implementation deadline to 1 August. Trump has signalled that additional letters—potentially including one to the European Union—could follow in the coming days. While the latest targets are relatively small U.S. trade partners—the Philippines shipped roughly $14 billion of goods to the United States last year and combined imports from the other six nations total less than $12 billion—the escalating tariff schedule adds to uncertainty for global supply chains already coping with a 10% baseline levy and prospective sector-specific duties on copper, pharmaceuticals and autos.
