Shionogi & Co. plans to build its first manufacturing facility outside Japan, selecting the United States for a plant that will produce the antibiotic cefiderocol, several media outlets including Nikkei reported. The Osaka-based drugmaker aims to have the factory operating by January 2029. The decision is intended to shield Shionogi from U.S. tariffs championed by former President Donald Trump, which have raised the cost of importing pharmaceuticals into the country. Establishing a domestic production base is expected to secure market access for cefiderocol, an antibiotic used against drug-resistant infections, while reducing the company’s exposure to trade barriers.
