Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz needed every ounce of his repertoire to fend off veteran Fabio Fognini in a gruelling first-round encounter at Wimbledon, prevailing 7-5, 6-7(5), 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 after four hours and 37 minutes on Centre Court. The 22-year-old Spaniard, bidding for a third consecutive title at the All England Club, extended his unbeaten run on grass in London to 15 matches and stretched his overall winning streak to 19. Fognini, 38, who was making what he said would be his final appearance at Wimbledon, pushed Alcaraz to the limit before fading in the decider as temperatures on court climbed. Alcaraz advances to face qualifier Oliver Tarvet in the second round.
