Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister States Tariff Talks Will Begin From a Strong Starting Point
Thailand's Acting Prime Minister Announced That Tariff Talks Will Be Held With the United States
Thailand has submitted a new trade proposal to the United States aimed at averting a threatened 36% tariff on Thai exports announced by the Trump administration. The proposal includes eliminating tariffs on 90% of U.S. imports into Thailand, an increase from an earlier plan to remove tariffs on over 60% of American goods. Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, who leads Thailand's negotiation team, expressed confidence that the U.S. will reduce the tariff to a level comparable to those imposed on other countries in the region. The Trump administration has indicated openness to reconsidering the 36% tariff if Thailand enhances U.S. market access by lowering tariffs and non-tariff barriers. Thailand is working to finalize an agreement before the August 1 deadline, with trade talks expected to conclude within days. The acting Thai Prime Minister also confirmed that tariff negotiations with the U.S. will begin from a strong starting point.
