Retired mixed-martial-arts star Randy Couture was airlifted to a Kansas City-area burn center after crashing his 1937 Chevy Pro Mod during National Hot Rod Association practice runs at a racetrack in Odessa, Missouri, on Tuesday, 8 July. The 62-year-old sustained first- and second-degree burns, additional trauma injuries and smoke inhalation, according to reports first made public by TMZ and confirmed by several outlets, including MMA Fighting and USA Today. Couture was completing licensing laps for a planned NHRA Pro Mod debut later this year when the vehicle left the track and was “completely wrecked,” people familiar with the incident said. The cause of the accident is still under investigation. A spokesperson told MMA Junkie the injuries are not considered life-threatening and that Couture is expected to recover, though no timetable has been given for his release from the burn unit. A six-time UFC champion and the promotion’s first fighter to hold titles in two weight classes, Couture retired from competition in 2011 and has since worked as a coach, actor and television analyst. His move into drag racing was announced in April as part of Scag Racing’s NHRA Pro Mod program, offering the former heavyweight a new competitive outlet beyond the octagon.
