Bedbug concerns are intensifying across the United States, according to new data from Yelp. The company’s Summer Infestation Index shows that searches for bedbug extermination services jumped 53 percent between May 2024 and April 2025. Las Vegas landed in the top three for such queries, while Chicago, St. Louis, several Oklahoma cities and communities in New Jersey and North Carolina also recorded sharp increases. Yelp said the Northeast and Midwest logged the steepest regional gains. Pest-control companies are reporting a similar trend. Orkin ranked Chicago the most bedbug-infested U.S. metro area for the fifth consecutive year, based on the volume of service calls it handled from May 15 2024 through May 14 2025. Rival Terminix’s annual list placed Philadelphia first, ahead of New York and Cleveland-Akron, with Los Angeles and Dallas–Fort Worth rounding out the top five. Experts attribute the rise to heavier domestic travel and the insects’ growing resistance to common treatments. “Bed bugs are some of the most resilient pests in the world, making them extremely difficult to control if brought into a home or hotel,” Orkin entomologist Ben Hottel said, urging early detection and prevention as peak summer travel begins.
