Chicago recorded nine homicides and 44 gun-shot victims over the July 4 holiday period, its lowest Independence Day toll in at least a decade, according to city police data compiled by the analytics site HeyJackass. The three-day span still included three mass-shooting incidents, but the overall casualty count fell below any year since 2015, when comparable records began. In Philadelphia, police tallied 19 separate shootings between Friday and early Monday, leaving six people dead and 46 wounded. The worst incident occurred around 1 a.m. Monday in the Grays Ferry neighborhood, where gunmen opened fire at a street cookout, killing three men aged 19-24 and injuring nine others, six of them teenagers. Doorbell-camera footage of the attack circulated widely online, and authorities have offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to arrests. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said that despite the holiday violence, city homicides remain roughly 10 percent lower year-to-date. Chicago officials offered no immediate explanation for the improvement in their city, but both departments said additional patrols and community programs would continue through the summer.
