A 25-year-old U.S. citizen and Army veteran, George Retes, says federal agents detained him for three days after an immigration raid on 10 July at the Glass House Farms cannabis operation in Camarillo, California. Retes, who works as a security guard at the site, told reporters agents smashed his car window, sprayed him with tear gas and pepper spray, and restrained him with officers kneeling on his back and neck despite his repeated assertions that he is an American citizen. Retes was taken to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles, placed on suicide watch and, he says, denied access to medical care, a lawyer and family contact before being released on 13 July without charges. The veteran missed his daughter’s third birthday and estimates his vehicle sustained significant damage during the arrest. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the arrest and release, adding that the U.S. Attorney’s Office is reviewing Retes’ case, along with dozens of others, for potential federal charges linked to the execution of a search warrant at the farm. More than 360 people were detained in concurrent raids at facilities in Camarillo and Carpinteria, part of an immigration crackdown launched by the Trump administration that officials say is also probing possible child-labor and human-trafficking violations. A 56-year-old farmworker died after falling from a greenhouse roof during the operation. Retes has called for a full investigation and says he plans to sue the federal government for wrongful detention and excessive force. Immigrant-rights advocates argue his case underscores the risk of U.S. citizens being swept up in large-scale enforcement actions, and state officials have pressed Washington for explanations about the conduct of the raid.
