Costco Wholesale Corp. said it will not dispense the abortion medication mifepristone at any of its more than 500 U.S. pharmacy locations, maintaining a stance the company said is driven by “lack of demand from our members and other patients.” In a statement, the warehouse-club operator noted that most customers who use the drug typically obtain it directly from their medical providers. The announcement follows a months-long campaign by a coalition of faith-based investors and activists, including Inspire Investing and the legal advocacy group Alliance Defending Freedom, which had urged several national retailers to steer clear of stocking the pill. With Costco off their list, the coalition said it will intensify efforts aimed at CVS Health and Walgreens Boots Alliance, the only large chains currently dispensing mifepristone in states where abortion remains legal. Mifepristone, approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2000 for terminating pregnancies of up to 10 weeks when used with misoprostol, now accounts for more than half of U.S. abortions, according to research cited by reproductive-health groups. Retailers are weighing whether to carry the drug amid a patchwork of state abortion laws and heightened political scrutiny, even after the Supreme Court last year allowed continued nationwide access while related litigation proceeds.
