Washington, D.C., will waive fares on Metrorail and Metrobus services starting at 5 p.m. on July 4, allowing residents and visitors to travel free to Independence Day events across the city. Mayor Muriel Bowser said the fare holiday, announced Thursday in coordination with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, is part of a wider safety plan. WMATA will also employ crowd-management "metering" at several National Mall station entrances to control passenger flow and prevent platform congestion. The city is supplementing the measure with a Lyft rideshare promo code that becomes active at 4 p.m. and a free concert on Pennsylvania Avenue beginning at 5 p.m. featuring R&B singer Jeremih and DJ Quicksilva. Officials urged the public to rely on transit and rideshare rather than driving to the fireworks and other festivities.
