A brief discussion 👇 In my view, Dean Phillips hints at a language issue that's important. If Zohran Mamdani and DSA types want to sell basic European/Canadian center-left policies -- thank you, please proceed! -- they should do so as "progressives" or "social democrats." CNN: “Is there room for you and Zohran Mamdani in the Democrat party?” Former Democrat Rep. Dean Phillips: “The answer, ultimately, I think is NO. When you have socialists in the Democrat party, I don’t know how that would be beneficial for the country.” https://t.co/vMJ51NYAkY
Former U.S. representative Dean Phillips said in a July 10 CNN interview that he does not believe the Democratic Party has room for self-described socialist lawmakers such as New York assemblymember Zohran Mamdani. “When you have socialists in the Democratic Party, I don’t know how anybody could argue that that would be beneficial for the party or for the country,” Phillips told the network. Phillips’ remarks underscore continuing tensions between the party’s centrist wing and members aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America, who have gained visibility among younger voters. Mamdani, elected to the New York State Assembly in 2020, is one of several DSA-backed officials pushing more progressive economic and housing policies inside the broader Democratic coalition.
