Senator John Fetterman on Thursday distanced himself from New York City’s Democratic mayoral nominee, Zohran Mamdani, telling Fox News he does not "agree with virtually any" of the candidate’s positions and describing the self-declared democratic socialist as "not even a Democrat." Fetterman, a swing-state moderate, added that Mamdani’s primary victory last month was “Christmas in July for the GOP,” arguing it hands Republicans an easy line of attack against the party. Mamdani, a Queens assemblyman aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America, unseated former governor Andrew Cuomo in June and is campaigning on fare-free buses, tuition-free CUNY, rent freezes and city-run grocery stores. Fetterman said the platform does not reflect voters in battleground states such as Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, underscoring a widening ideological gap between the party’s centrist and socialist wings as the 2025 municipal and 2026 mid-term cycles approach.
