DHS Reports Zero Border Crossings for Third Month, ICE Agents Attacked in San Francisco
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said U.S. border agents have recorded no illegal border crossings for three straight months and that 1.6 million undocumented migrants have voluntarily returned to their home countries since the start of the year. Noem credited stepped-up enforcement for the trend and said hundreds of thousands of people with criminal records had also been detained or removed. ICE officers have made 5,000 arrests in Los Angeles since June and, in separate operations this week, apprehended individuals convicted of offenses ranging from child sexual assault to gang violence in California, Texas, New York and New Jersey, according to agency statements. The intensifying crackdown has coincided with a rise in confrontations. In San Francisco, federal prosecutors charged Adrian Guerrero with assaulting an ICE agent and destroying government property after a group of about 20 protesters surrounded officers outside an immigration courthouse on Montgomery Street. Court filings allege Guerrero slashed a vehicle tire, brandished a knife and threatened to stab an agent and harm the agent’s family. DHS said assaults on its officers have risen ten-fold over recent months and blamed what it called permissive sanctuary policies for emboldening attacks. Noem vowed that the incidents would not deter enforcement operations aimed at what the department describes as the “worst of the worst” offenders.
