A gunman opened fire through stained-glass windows of Annunciation Catholic School’s church in Minneapolis on Wednesday morning, killing two pupils aged eight and ten and wounding 17 other worshippers during the first Mass of the academic year, police said. Officers entered the building within minutes and found the attacker dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the rear of the sanctuary. The wounded include 14 children between six and 15 and three parishioners in their 80s; all are expected to survive, according to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara. The assailant fired dozens of rounds, and investigators later discovered that two exits had been barricaded from the outside, apparently to hinder escape. Authorities identified the shooter as 23-year-old Robin Westman, a 2017 graduate of the school who legally purchased a rifle, shotgun and pistol in recent months. Westman—who had no prior criminal history—used all three weapons during the attack and left additional firearms at associated residences, police said. FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau is treating the assault as an act of domestic terrorism and a hate crime targeting Catholics. Investigators executed four search warrants and recovered a manifesto and videos that Westman had scheduled for release on YouTube; the material contains extremist references and anti-religious messages and has been removed from the platform. President Donald Trump ordered U.S. flags flown at half-staff and spoke with Governor Tim Walz, who called the shooting “evil and incomprehensible.” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey urged legislative action on gun violence, noting the incident is the 146th school shooting recorded in the United States this year.
