U.S. immigration authorities say a knife-wielding demonstrator threatened to stab an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer and harm the agent’s family during a protest outside the federal immigration courthouse on Montgomery Street in San Francisco. According to the Department of Homeland Security, Adrian Guerrero, a U.S. citizen, slashed the tire of a government vehicle and, along with a crowd of roughly 20 protesters, punched and doused officers with pepper spray as agents carried out a removal operation. Four ICE officers sustained minor injuries, including a jammed finger, before Federal Protective Services and San Francisco police dispersed the group and arrested Guerrero. He has been charged in federal court with assault on a federal officer and destruction of government property; authorities recovered a folding knife, goggles and a patterned keffiyeh at the scene. DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said assaults on ICE personnel have risen ten-fold nationwide, blaming what she called hostile rhetoric from local politicians in sanctuary jurisdictions. The San Francisco clash follows similar courthouse confrontations in Los Angeles earlier this summer. In a separate incident the same day, masked pro-Palestinian protesters outside an ICE facility in Portland chased away a journalist with verbal threats, underscoring broader tensions surrounding immigration enforcement on the West Coast.
