U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a first-term Democrat from Dallas, sharply criticized a plan by Texas Governor Greg Abbott to force another round of redistricting before the 2026 midterm elections. Speaking on 15 July, Crockett said the Republican-controlled legislature has “always been found to be intentionally discriminatory” and warned that new maps would again suppress the political power of the state’s Black, Latino and Asian voters, who together form a majority of the population. Crockett argued that repeated court findings against Texas over its voting maps show a pattern of intentional discrimination. “The scheme of the Republicans has consistently been to make sure that they mute our voices,” she said, adding that she would press for federal oversight if Abbott proceeds with a special session on redistricting. In a separate appearance the same day, the congresswoman broadened her criticism, saying “we’ve got these little red states that ain’t contributing nothing.” The remark drew swift pushback from conservative commentators and Republican officials, who accused her of dismissing residents of GOP-led states. Abbott’s office has not publicly responded to Crockett’s comments, and no date has been set for a special legislative session.
