The U.S. Secret Service said it will run a routine threat-response drill at the White House on Friday while President Donald Trump is in Anchorage, Alaska, for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The exercise is scheduled from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Eastern Time and could involve simulated gunfire, the agency said. Neighbourhood residents have been advised not to be alarmed; some sidewalks around the executive mansion will be closed, although roads are expected to remain open. The training comes amid heightened scrutiny of presidential security following an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, last year that wounded Trump and killed one spectator, as well as a separate attempt at a golf course in September. The Secret Service has stepped up training and other protective measures in the wake of those incidents.
