T-Mobile US has announced the termination of its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs as part of its efforts to secure regulatory approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for two major acquisition deals. The company confirmed it would eliminate all DEI roles and remove related language from its website, emphasizing that the changes are substantive rather than symbolic. This move follows pressure from FCC Chairman Brendan Carr and the Trump administration, which has indicated that merger approvals would be contingent on such actions. The acquisitions include a $4.4 billion deal to acquire U.S. Cellular and a $4.9 billion joint venture to acquire fiber company Metronet. The U.S. Department of Justice has also signaled a softer stance on corporate consolidation by not seeking to block the U.S. Cellular acquisition. The FCC subsequently approved both deals after T-Mobile's commitment to end its DEI programs. Despite ending DEI initiatives, T-Mobile reaffirmed its commitment to equal opportunity hiring without quotas.
