Trump administration cancels $175M in funding for California high-speed rail — US Transportation Dept.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Tuesday he is rescinding an additional $175 million in federal grants for California’s high-speed rail program, intensifying the Trump administration’s effort to cut off funding for the long-delayed project. The money had been earmarked for four undertakings, including the Le Grand overcrossing, track extensions and station work in Madera. Duffy, who claims the initiative has spent $15 billion without laying a mile of high-speed track, also directed the Federal Railroad Administration to review all remaining obligations tied to the project. The latest action follows the department’s July cancellation of roughly $4 billion in grants, a move California is contesting in court. Voters approved the rail plan in 2008 to link San Francisco and Los Angeles in under three hours, but it has since been scaled back to a 170-mile Merced-to-Bakersfield segment now projected to cost about $22 billion and finish in 2033.
