The US Environmental Protection Agency on 10 July unveiled a public repository of documents, data and explanatory material on contrails and geoengineering, after Administrator Lee Zeldin ordered staff to "compile everything we know … without any exception." Zeldin said the move is intended to end years of speculation by making the agency’s information fully accessible and transparent. The new web pages provide frequently-asked questions, scientific background and statutory references on geoengineering, including solar-radiation management techniques that researchers have proposed to cool the planet. A companion facts sheet explains that condensation trails are a routine by-product of high-altitude jet exhaust and states the federal government "is not aware of there ever being a contrail intentionally formed over the United States for the purpose of geoengineering or weather modification." Zeldin’s initiative comes amid a resurgence of conspiracy claims that so-called “chemtrails” caused recent severe floods in Texas and renewed calls from some lawmakers for a federal ban on geoengineering. By placing the material online, the Trump administration says it aims to address public concerns while discouraging misinformation about atmospheric research and routine aviation emissions.
