The Trump administration has abandoned a pledge to make the National Climate Assessments available on NASA’s website, reversing an assurance given earlier this month after the long-standing globalchange.gov portal was taken offline. NASA confirmed late Monday that it has “no legal obligations” to host the material, saying the U.S. Global Change Research Program had met its statutory duty simply by submitting the reports to Congress. The National Climate Assessments are peer-reviewed studies required under the 1990 Global Change Research Act. They provide federal, state and local officials with projections of how warming temperatures affect agriculture, infrastructure, public health and the economy. On 3 July, NASA had said it would upload all past assessments to ensure continuity, but the agency scrapped that plan on 14 July, citing resource considerations and jurisdictional limits. Scientists warned the decision will hinder public access to information needed for adaptation planning. Texas Tech climatologist Katharine Hayhoe called the assessments “vital” for safeguarding communities, while former White House science adviser John Holdren accused the administration of trying to bury evidence of climate risks. The most recent assessment, published in 2023, concluded that climate change is already threatening Americans’ security, health and livelihoods, with minority and Indigenous populations facing disproportionate impacts.
The Trump administration takes another step to obscure climate change reports. After official websites hosting national climate assessments were taken down, NASA — initially expected to rehost them — announces it would no longer do so. https://t.co/nzdZ1pG1rx
Trump is now trying to hide both the Epstein files and the climate change files. The first may not threaten human civilization, the latter does. Trump administration says it won't publish major climate change reports on NASA website as promised https://t.co/GZdiU6DwEC
