President Donald Trump on Monday disputed Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s assertion that only nine people have been arrested in Washington, D.C., since federal authorities took over parts of the city’s policing. Posting on his Truth Social platform and repeating the claim in remarks to reporters, Trump said his administration’s operation has resulted in “well over 1,000” arrests, the seizure of dozens of illegal firearms and the detention of “scores” of undocumented immigrants. He added that violent crime in the capital has fallen by more than 80% in the past 11 days and that the city has recorded nine consecutive days without a homicide, which he said has not happened in years. Johnson, whose approval ratings in Chicago have sagged in recent polls, responded that large-scale arrests do not curb violent crime and argued the nation’s “addiction to jails and incarceration” is racist, immoral and ineffective. The Democratic mayor said Chicago would not replicate Washington’s tactics, contending that investment in social programs is a better long-term strategy. Trump countered that the early results in Washington bolster his case for tougher enforcement and called Johnson “incompetent” for downplaying the impact of the federal crackdown.

Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson declares all prisons to be racist because blacks commit violent crimes at a disproportionate rate to whites and should not be punished for it. I wish I was making this up. https://t.co/VWDB61SYGI
