U.S. Education Dept. Opens Foreign-Funding Probe at University of Michigan

The U.S. Department of Education has opened a foreign-funding investigation into the University of Michigan after concluding that the school’s mandatory disclosures were “inaccurate and incomplete,” according to a letter released Tuesday. Federal officials have given the Ann Arbor-based institution 30 days to hand over tax records, a full inventory of foreign gifts, grants and contracts, and other supporting documents. The probe follows the recent arrest of two Chinese scientists affiliated with the university and adds to mounting federal scrutiny of foreign influence on U.S. campuses.
