The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has announced a probe into the persistently high grocery prices, despite falling costs for retailers. FTC Chair Lina Khan emphasized the investigation's goal to determine if major grocery chains, including Walmart, Costco, and Target, are exploiting their market power to inflate prices for American consumers. The inquiry, which requires major grocery chains to provide detailed information on their costs and prices for common products, is a response to the ongoing high prices that began during the Covid-19 pandemic. This issue has become a significant theme in the current presidential election campaign. Khan stated that no American should face inflated prices due to unlawful business practices, highlighting the FTC's commitment to combating illegal pricing strategies. Kroger’s gross margin was reported at 22.4% of sales, and the chains have been bringing in enormous profits.
