Nebraska Republican Congressman Don Bacon said he will retire from the U.S. House of Representatives at the end of the current term, explaining that the demands of the job were taking too great a personal toll. “I don’t want to do 14-hour days and D.C. four days a week anymore,” he said on 5 July. In a subsequent NBC News interview, the five-term lawmaker indicated he has not ruled out future campaigns, mentioning both a potential run for Nebraska governor in 2026 and a bid for the presidency in 2028. Bacon, 61, represents the Omaha-area 2nd District, a perennial battleground that Democrats carried in the 2024 presidential election.
