US Treasury Secretary Bessent said the United States does not aim to sever economic ties with China but instead wants to reduce supply-chain vulnerabilities. Speaking on Wednesday, Bessent described China’s roughly 30% share of global manufacturing as "not sustainable," underscoring Washington’s push to diversify production sources after several years of trade friction and pandemic-related disruptions. Bessent framed the administration’s approach as "supply de-risking," distinguishing it from full decoupling. The strategy seeks to secure alternative suppliers and strengthen domestic capabilities while maintaining commercial links with Beijing, she said. Her remarks come as the U.S. 145% tariff on a wide range of Chinese goods, introduced in April, continues to reshape trade flows and corporate sourcing decisions.
