The City of Phoenix has concluded its nationwide search for a permanent police chief, naming Matthew Giordano as the new head of the Phoenix Police Department. Giordano, currently serving as the executive director of the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST), was selected from three finalists: Malik Aziz, chief of police in Prince George’s County, Maryland; Matthew Giordano; and Mirtha V. Ramos, former chief of DeKalb County, Georgia. The finalists participated in a public forum on June 16 before the city announced Giordano’s appointment in early July. This marks the first permanent police chief appointment in Phoenix in over two years, following the interim tenure of Michael Sullivan. City officials and community leaders expressed support for Giordano, citing his extensive leadership experience and connections to the city. Separately, in Fort Worth, Texas, former Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia has been named one of five finalists for the police chief position. Garcia, who left the Dallas Police Department less than a year ago and currently serves as an Assistant City Manager overseeing Austin’s public safety departments, is among the candidates considered for the Fort Worth role.
