Rosendo Gómez Piedra has resigned as the special prosecutor for the Ayotzinapa case, which involves the disappearance of 43 students in 2014. His resignation was confirmed by Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico City, who noted that Gómez Piedra stepped down following pressure and requests from the families of the disappeared students. Alejandro Gertz Manero, Attorney General of the Republic, reportedly dismissed Gómez Piedra after two complaints accused him of supporting the campaign of a candidate for the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) and exhibiting behavior described as "excentricidades y opulencia" (eccentricities and opulence). Gómez Piedra served nearly three years in this role and faced ongoing criticism and allegations of corruption and lack of trust from the families. Mauricio Pazarán, currently the Coordinator General of Investigation for the Ayotzinapa case, has been appointed as the interim special prosecutor. Pazarán has already held meetings with the families and is regarded as having good acceptance and knowledge of the case. The transition was publicly addressed during the daily government briefing known as the "mañanera," where Sheinbaum emphasized that the resignation was Gómez Piedra's decision and highlighted Pazarán's suitability to assume the responsibilities.
