A federal judge in Miami has barred Florida and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security from sending additional migrants to the detention camp known as “Alligator Alcatraz” and ordered officials to wind down operations at the Everglades site within 60 days. In an 82-page preliminary injunction issued late Thursday, U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams directed the state and federal governments to begin dismantling fencing, lighting, generators, sewage systems and other support infrastructure, while relocating current detainees during the shutdown. The ruling also prohibits any further construction or expansion at the facility. Williams sided with environmental groups and the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, which argued that the camp—built on the runway of the Dade-Collier Training Airport—threatens endangered species and violates federal environmental law. The judge said officials provided “little to no evidence” that the ecologically sensitive wetlands were the only feasible location. Opened earlier this year as a centerpiece of President Donald Trump’s intensified immigration enforcement, the compound can hold up to 5,000 people and costs roughly $450 million a year to operate, according to court filings. Critics have reported sweltering, overcrowded conditions in the hastily erected mix of trailers and tents. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the Department of Homeland Security filed an immediate notice of appeal with the Eleventh Circuit and are expected to seek a stay of the injunction. Unless a higher court intervenes, the ruling halts further use of the facility while litigation over its environmental impact proceeds.
