Sina Gholinejad, a 37-year-old Iranian national, pleaded guilty in a federal court in North Carolina to charges related to his role in the Robbinhood ransomware scheme. The operation targeted computer networks of multiple U.S. cities, most notably Baltimore, between 2019 and early 2025. The 2019 ransomware attack on Baltimore's computer systems caused more than $19 million in damages and disrupted critical city services for months. Gholinejad admitted to one count of computer fraud and abuse and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. He used the Robbinhood ransomware to encrypt data and demand ransom payments in bitcoin. The U.S. Department of Justice announced that he faces a maximum prison sentence of 30 years. This case is part of a broader international crackdown on cybercrime, which has included the seizure of hundreds of servers and the indictment of multiple individuals involved in ransomware and malware operations.
