U.S. President Donald Trump said his administration is reviewing the validity of clemency grants issued by former President Joe Biden after questions emerged over whether some documents were signed with an autopen rather than by Biden himself. Trump told reporters on 25 Aug. that “all those pardons” could prove “worthless” if the sign-off method violated legal requirements, calling the recipients “very bad” and “unpatriotic” without naming individuals. He added that officials are “looking at the whole autopen scam,” suggesting any affected pardons might be voided. Federal law permits a president to delegate signature authority to an autopen only when he has approved the content of the document. It was not immediately clear how many of Biden’s pardons are under scrutiny or what criteria the Trump administration will apply in its review. The White House and the Justice Department declined immediate comment.
