Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene on 5 July introduced federal legislation that would make it a felony to inject, release or disperse chemicals into the atmosphere for the purpose of altering weather, climate, temperature or sunlight. The measure is Greene’s first broad attempt in Congress to restrict geoengineering practices such as cloud seeding or solar-radiation management. The proposal bars any individual, corporation or government agency from undertaking weather-modification activities and classifies violations as a felony offense. Mirroring language in Florida’s recently enacted Senate Bill 56, the draft sets potential penalties of up to five years in prison and fines that can reach $100,000. Greene said she drafted the bill after “months of research” and added Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee as an initial cosponsor. The congresswoman argues that unregulated geoengineering poses unknown risks to public health and agriculture and that “no person, company or government should ever be allowed to modify our weather.”
