Finnish startup IXI has emerged from stealth mode and raised $36.5 million in Series A funding to develop the world's first autofocus glasses, known as IXI Adaptive Eyewear. The funding round was led by London-based investment firm Plural, with participation from a range of investors including Amazon's Alexa Fund, Tesi, Heartcore, FOV Ventures, byFounders, Eurazeo, and Tiny Supercomputer. IXI's glasses, developed by co-founders Niko Eiden and Ville Miettinen, are designed to automatically adjust focus based on the wearer's eye movements, aiming to provide a seamless vision correction experience for conditions like presbyopia. The technology utilizes real-time, low-power eye tracking and dynamic liquid crystal lens adjustments, promising to enhance vision without the need for multiple pairs of glasses or the limitations of traditional progressive lenses. The company, which also has founders from the mixed reality company Varjo, targets the global eyewear market, valued at over $200 billion and growing at a rate of over 8% annually. IXI plans to use the new funds to finalize its first-generation product, which boasts a 2-day battery life, and begin commercial operations.
