AYN has entered the fast-growing market for dual-screen Android gaming devices, releasing a short video on 19 August that confirms development of its first clamshell handheld, the Thor, alongside a next-generation Odin 3. The teaser shows a folding design with dual displays, active cooling and a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, but the company has not yet disclosed detailed specifications, pricing or a shipping window. The announcement came less than a day after rival Ayaneo began taking Indiegogo pre-orders for the Pocket DS, an Android 13 handheld that mirrors Nintendo’s DS form factor. The Pocket DS pairs a 7-inch 1080p OLED top screen with a 5-inch 4:3 lower display and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon G3x Gen 2, up to 16 GB of RAM and as much as 1 TB of UFS 4.0 storage. Early-bird pricing starts at US$399, rising to US$519 at retail, with higher-spec models reaching US$759; the crowdfunding campaign surpassed US$500,000 within its first 24 hours, and shipments are scheduled to begin in October. AYN’s entry intensifies competition among specialist hardware makers seeking to attract retro-gaming and emulation enthusiasts with devices that replicate Nintendo’s dual-screen experience on modern Android hardware. While Ayaneo has set an aggressive timetable and detailed specifications, AYN’s brand recognition in the handheld community could complicate Ayaneo’s push, especially if Thor undercuts its rival on price or performance once full specifications are revealed.
