Capcom used Gamescom 2025’s Opening Night Live showcase to unveil Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the first mainline entry in the samurai-horror franchise since 2006. The publisher confirmed a 2026 launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam, signalling a full-scale revival of the long-dormant series. Hands-on demos presented to several media outlets portray Way of the Sword as an action title that blends deliberate, Souls-style swordplay with more forgiving defensive mechanics. Players control legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, whose Oni Gauntlet allows parries, soul absorption and special “Oni Armament” attacks. Early impressions highlight a boss duel with rival Sasaki Ganryu and note a focus on precise timing over brute difficulty. The title joins Resident Evil Requiem and Pragmata in Capcom’s 2026 pipeline, rounding out a year that will feature both franchise stalwarts and new intellectual property. While Capcom has not disclosed a specific release date, the publisher said development is on track and promised additional details in the coming months.
Resident Evil had me hiding, Pragmata made me solve puzzles mid-fight, and Onimusha nearly broke my sword hand. I got my hands on all three titles at a Gamescom event in New York City, and I can't wait for more. https://t.co/9eJphQIvAD
After nailing a quirky PS2 throwback with Kunitsu-gami, Capcom's Pragmata has the charming energy of an Xbox 360-era shooter like The Darkness or Syndicate https://t.co/2h6ll1xRGg
Even if you're as tired of parrying in action games as I am, pay attention to Onimusha https://t.co/5JlxYblTtH
