President Donald Trump said he is prepared to abandon his forthcoming summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska if the discussions do not show early signs of progress. In a Fox News interview broadcast Friday, Trump stated he would "walk" and "head back home real fast" should the talks stall. The leaders are due to meet later Friday at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage for what the White House has described as a high-stakes attempt to advance a cease-fire in the Russia-Ukraine war. Trump expressed optimism that the face-to-face encounter "is going to work out very well," but cautioned that failure could scuttle any further engagement. Trump added that, provided the initial session is productive, he hopes to convene a second meeting that would include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and possibly European leaders. Conversely, he warned that "we may not have any more meetings at all" if Friday’s talks falter.
