A recent report from the U.S. Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) reveals that senior United Nations officials have been colluding with the Taliban to divert international aid intended for humanitarian purposes in Afghanistan. The report alleges that up to 70% of USAID humanitarian funds and other assistance are being redirected by the Taliban, who continue to provide safe haven, funding, and weapons to al-Qaeda. The diversion is reportedly enforced through coercion, favoring Pashtun communities while blocking aid to minority groups. Additionally, UN officials have been implicated in demanding bribes to facilitate the delivery of U.S. assistance, effectively skimming aid funds and participating in extortion schemes alongside the Taliban. This corruption undermines transparency and exacerbates Afghanistan's ongoing humanitarian crisis, which persists four years after the Taliban's return to power. The crisis includes rising maternal mortality rates due to aid cuts and Taliban restrictions on female staff, as well as continued civilian harm from landmines. UN experts have urged the international community to reject normalization of the Taliban regime, while the UN has acknowledged Taliban interference in aid distribution and emphasized the need for safeguards. Meanwhile, many Afghan refugees face forced returns amid tightening immigration enforcement in neighboring countries.
