Maersk Reports Fire on Marie Maersk Container Vessel Off Liberia`s Coast with Fire Continuing on Thursday as Crew Works to Control the Situation
A.P. Moller–Maersk said a fire broke out on its 15,282-TEU container ship "Marie Maersk" while the vessel was sailing off the coast of Liberia. The blaze, detected late Wednesday and still burning on Thursday, has been confined to one section of the ship, the company said. Maersk added that all seafarers on board are safe, the vessel remains stable and main propulsion and auxiliary machinery continue to operate. The crew is working to contain the fire while the company arranges specialised external firefighting assistance. The Danish carrier said it is assessing potential damage and the need for port diversion but has not reported any fuel leaks or environmental impact. An investigation will follow once the situation is brought fully under control.
