Mistral AI has launched Devstral, a state-of-the-art open-source large language model (LLM) specifically designed for coding agents and software engineering tasks. Developed in collaboration with All Hands AI, Devstral features 24 billion parameters and is released under the Apache 2.0 license. The model excels in agentic coding capabilities such as codebase exploration, multi-file edits, and tool calling, enabling it to solve real GitHub issues and integrate with code agent scaffolds. Devstral has achieved the top ranking among open-source models on the SWE-Bench Verified benchmark, outperforming competitors including GPT-4.1-mini and Claude 3.5. It is optimized to run locally on laptops, including Macs with 32GB RAM, making it accessible for real-world software development environments. The model is available for use and fine-tuning via GGUF format and is integrated on platforms such as Kaggle Models and Together AI. Mistral AI emphasizes Devstral’s performance superiority over other open-source models and its practical utility for developers.
