OpenAI said it will unveil its next-generation large language model, GPT-5, in a livestream scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 7 at 10 a.m. Pacific time. The launch will be the first major upgrade to the company’s flagship technology since GPT-4 was released in March 2023. Two early testers told Reuters the new system shows marked gains in coding and in solving science and mathematics problems, though they described the advance from GPT-4 as less dramatic than the previous generation’s leap. Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman has indicated GPT-5 blends traditional scaling with “test-time compute,” which temporarily allocates extra processing power to tackle particularly complex tasks. The release comes as rival models from Google, Anthropic and Meta narrow the performance gap with GPT-4. OpenAI—backed by Microsoft and last valued at roughly $300 billion—has grappled with constraints on training data and the risk of hardware failures during months-long training runs.
