Elon Musk’s artificial-intelligence venture xAI has published the full weights of its Grok 2 and Grok 2.5 large language models on the Hugging Face repository, making roughly 500 gigabytes of code and data freely downloadable under the Grok 2 Community License Agreement. The upload fulfils Musk’s earlier pledge to open-source xAI models once they are superseded. Musk wrote on X that Grok 2.5, described as the company’s best model of 2024, is now open source and that Grok 3 will follow in about six months. Grok 2, first released on 14 Aug 2024, can be run locally with eight GPUs carrying more than 40 GB of memory each, according to documentation on Hugging Face. The release gives researchers and smaller developers direct access to xAI’s technology stack at a time when competition among generative-AI model providers is intensifying. By opening the code, xAI aims to foster external testing and improvements while positioning its forthcoming Grok 3 model for a wider ecosystem on launch.
