Argentina's state-run oil and gas company YPF SA has agreed to acquire shale oil assets from France's TotalEnergies SE in the Vaca Muerta shale formation. The deal involves YPF purchasing a 45% stake in two unconventional blocks, La Escalonada and Rincón La Ceniza, from Total Austral for $500 million. This acquisition consolidates YPF's leadership position in Vaca Muerta amid continued divestment by international oil companies despite optimism about Argentina's pro-market President Javier Milei. In parallel, YPF reported a nearly 90% drop in its second-quarter 2025 profits, attributed to lower fuel prices and a 6% decline in revenues. The company is also investing $400 million to reactivate the former Oil refinery to produce jet fuel. YPF aims to increase its shale oil production to 190,000 barrels per day by the end of 2025, up from 165,000 barrels per day in July. Meanwhile, Colombia's offshore energy prospects have weakened due to disappointing discoveries and stricter regulations.
